3-20 (Travel Day)
3-21 (Ski Day)
The basic plan of the trip was to drive up to Gaylord on Friday evening. This would have us ready to hit the slopes right away on Saturday to ski all day and then head home. We got reservations at the Comfort Inn & Suites in Gaylord as this would be much cheaper than staying at the Boyne Resort itself.
We had decided on Boyne as I have been there many times in October for Michigan District Pastors Conferences. We also heard good word about Nub's Nob from our dentist Dr. Dull. Boyne appeared bigger and being also more familiar we made it our choice.
The drive up was uneventful. We shared some of the drive time and spent the trip listening to March Madness games. We left Monroe just before 530p. We hit a Subway near Howell for supper. When we got to the hotel we amazed to see Gaylord with piles of snow everywhere from the 18-inch storm they got hit by a week earlier. We stayed up late watching the March Madness games.
We were up 645a in the morning with a goal of hitting breakfast and leaving for Boyne at 745a. This pretty much went to plan and we were arriving at Boyne around 810a and parking in the day use lot on the south side. The ski rentals were in the same building that all my conference sessions are in. We walked over there and the rental pickup was fairly streamlined. We rented a locker for $6 to put Seth's shoes in and save us the walk back to the car on both ends of the day.
Leading up to the trip we found that the earlier you bought tickets the cheaper they could be. But you also didn't know what your weather would be like. Getting to 3rd weekend in March risks more warm weather and bad snow in upper Michigan. We were fortunate that the area got hit with about 18 inches a week before our date. Weather did hit some 40s in the week prior to our ski but the overnights were still freezing. Our day was forecast for a high of 42, chance of afternoon rain.
Our lift tickets were able to be retrieved from a kiosk machine. You scan a barcode and then the machine spits out credit card size RFIDs which you scan to get on all the lifts during the day. Seth and I found that our gloves had a nice zipper on the outside that could fit the card and keep it very handy for scanning.
The morning was around 30 degrees and cloudy. Snow conditions were great when the lifts opened 9am. Great skiing til just before noon. Started snowing and warming a bit. Visibility with the goggles not great. We did lunch at Trophy Room Pizzeria. Busy and full. Very good pizza. Weather radar suggested rain for an hour or two. We wondered if our day was done. While we ate it appeared to be snow only.
When we finished eating and went outside there was a very light drizzle. It didn't last long, and that was it for precip. Seemed like a new half inch to an inch on slopes, fairly slushy. The skiing wasn't as good in afternoon as all the grooming was no more. Slopes cut up and the snow warmer and tacky.
Dad skiied til about 230p and was tired. Seth and I remained and had another 5-6 good runs. We hit a number of the black diamond runs on the front side including at the Super Bowl on the south end. Good fun for us. It felt like it cooled a bit and snow improved slightly. Sun even came out a few mins. Turned into a nice afternoon.
All our runs can be seen on my two Garmin activities from the day.
We left around 430p after returning Seth's skis. Had an easy drive home while listening to more March Madness games.
